“Populism and Media”
In this comprehensive compilation by İnceoğlu and Çoban, the various effects and reflections of “populism,” which has been prominent in recent times, in various fields are discussed.
The issue of authoritarianism has long been debated both globally and in our country. Authoritarian populist leaders effectively utilize the media, speaking on behalf of the people and claiming to act in their best interests. The point where fascism and populism diverge is elections. “Unlike fascists, populists are usually a part of the democratic game; they may lose an election and eventually step down from power” (Finchelstein, 2021). The most common point of convergence between fascism and populism is that they do not leave room for opposition. In countries where the media is not free, the public must make a special effort to obtain information, which is not very likely considering educational levels and ideological shaping in schools and families. In this sense, it is necessary for opponents to both use alternative channels and engage in counter-propaganda. Those who attempt to do so are often silenced by the judicial and coercive forces of the state, depending on the structures of the countries. İnceoğlu and Çoban’s comprehensive compilation you are holding in your hands deals with the various effects and reflections of “populism,” which has been prominent in recent times in various fields of our lives.
