Artist Melis Gürsel’s solo painting and sculpture exhibition titled “KUSUR” met art enthusiasts at Evrim Art Gallery on Saturday, February 17, 2024.
In her works reflecting abstract and expressionist portrait styles, the artist uses environmentally friendly materials. Gürsel presented 53 pieces, integrating materials such as gold leaf, zinc, and dried coffee with recyclable paper, cardboard, and wood, to the admiration of art lovers.
Regarding her exhibition titled “Kusur” (Flaw), artist Gürsel expressed her thoughts:
“Challenging gender, addressing inequality of opportunity, and promoting inclusive and diverse spaces are the cornerstones of my paintings. In my recent works, I explore the theme of ‘Red Scarf Attached to the Jaw,’ symbolizing women and men who are not allowed to express themselves in society. Additionally, I design my consciously flawed, i.e., ‘cracked,’ sculpture masks and busts to sprout flowers in their voids, using them as a tool for freedom of expression. Flaw is a treasure we all share. For those who seek it at its core, it is not a deficiency but rather the gateway to departure from the ego’s signs. With the hope that you can find a piece of yourself in the cracks in every branch of art.”
Betül Ketenci, the founder of Evrim Art Gallery, said:
“We are honored to host Artist Melis Gürsel’s works at Evrim Art Gallery. We invite art enthusiasts to the exhibition featuring the ‘Kusur’ collection, consisting of 53 paintings and sculptures by the artist.”
The exhibition can be visited at Evrim Art Gallery until March 1, 2024.
