Georg Baselitz’s works produced in the last decade will be exhibited at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum from September 13, 2024, to February 2, 2025.
The Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) at Sabancı University is preparing to host an exhibition of works by the renowned German painter, printmaker, and sculptor Georg Baselitz, supported by Akbank Sanat, starting from September 13. The exhibition titled Georg Baselitz: The Last Decade, featuring nearly a hundred large-scale paintings and sculptures created by the artist in recent years, will be held throughout SSM’s gallery spaces and garden. In addition to the exhibition at SSM, a comprehensive selection of the artist’s print works will simultaneously be on display at Akbank Sanat. The exhibition will be curated by Sir Norman Rosenthal, an expert on the artist’s works.
Since 1980, Baselitz has had a profound impact on the international art world, shaping a new identity for German art in the second half of the 20th century. In response to the trauma and tragedy of World War II, he developed a unique and completely individual artistic style. For the artist, who has painted his compositions upside down since 1969, this new format has been a way to strip form of its content, to stand somewhere between abstraction and figuration, and to revolutionize a traditionally accepted medium of its time.
In addition to a comprehensive catalog accompanying the exhibition, a rich program will offer a deep insight into Georg Baselitz’s half-century of creative process and artistic quest. This program will include a series of lectures, film screenings, educational sessions for adults and children, and workshops.
