If you are scammed, stay calm and follow these steps to minimize the scam’s impact.
The combination of scammers’ creativity, users’ goodwill, and weak corporate security creates billions of dollars in risk. According to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) data, U.S. consumers lost nearly $6 billion to fraud in 2021, up 70 percent from the previous year.
Sometimes it is immediately obvious that something is wrong. You may have clicked on a phishing link and figured out what happened a split second later. Or maybe you leave your phone to a tech support scammer who has access to your computer. But sometimes the risk is not that obvious. For example, hackers can obtain your credit card information or personal information such as social security numbers through third-party breach. They often sell this information in a cybercrime marketplace where scammers congregate. The stolen data flow to the underground cybercrime world continues at great speed. In the US alone, there were more than 1,800 violations reported in 2022, affecting 422 million consumers, up 40 percent year-on-year.
Cybersecurity company ESET has summarized the signs that you are a victim of fraud in five points.
Unusual transactions and/or new credit card limits. If scammers have your data or financial information, they can use it for payment fraud. In this case, the stolen card information or the cards registered in the stolen accounts are used without your knowledge. Alternatively, they can use your credentials to apply for new credit cards.
The purchased product has not arrived. E-commerce fraud is another growing problem. Scammers often try to sell expensive hardware online and at very low prices to deceive buyers. However, these products are out of stock and require payment through applications that do not offer buyer protection and require instant cash payment.
The person you were dating has suddenly disappeared. According to the FBI, romantic relationship scams earned scammers more than $956 million in 2021. Many incidents went unreported because the victims were too embarrassed to admit they had been scammed. This figure may be the tip of the iceberg. A romantic relationship scammer usually establishes an online relationship with his victim before asking for money for false claims. When they feel their victims have nothing else to offer, they disappear, never to be heard from again.
Account locked. If a scammer gets their hands on your login information, they usually gain access to your account and change your password. This could be anything from your social media or Netflix account information. These may be collected for personal information, including registered credit card details. But it is also a valuable product in its own right. According to one report, $2 is paid for a social security number, while Instagram accounts are worth $45 each. This is because such accounts can be used to send spam emails to other users who follow your profile.
Cannot withdraw money from crypto investment. Investment scams are another high earning avenue. This type of scam is more common than any other category of cybercrime, with the exception of business email privacy, which generated nearly $1.5 billion in 2021. Investors are often encouraged to deposit money, perhaps even shown to earn false returns on their investments. However, when you really want to withdraw some of that money, you probably won’t find anyone.
Here are the recommendations of ESET experts to survive an attack and build resilience to future cyber attacks:
Use strong, unique passwords that are perfectly stored and recalled by a password manager.
Use two-factor authentication (2FA), which adds a second layer of security on top of passwords to reduce the risk of phishing and account hijacking.
Keep devices and software updated with patches and latest versions.
Do not save your personal and financial information in an online account. While it’s more difficult to enter details each time, it’s safer to log out as a guest.
Make sure all devices and computers are safe with anti-malware from a known vendor.
Use a well-known security solution on all your devices.
