According to the Kaspersky Digital Payment survey, 13% of respondents in Turkey experience financial losses due to threats they encounter while using online banking and mobile wallet services. The impact of the cyber threat not only imposes a financial burden on consumers, but also affects them psychologically.
According to Kaspersky Security Network, more than 473,000 financial threats have been blocked by Kaspersky in Turkey alone. These attacks aim to steal financial information such as credit card numbers and login details, and often use social engineering tactics to lure victims.
Cyber attacks also cause psychological destruction!
The impact of a cyber threat targeting digital payments not only imposes a financial burden on consumers, but also affects them psychologically. For example, 69% of respondents say they have lost their sleep because of this and are very worried about getting their money back. 64% of users report that their trust in digital payment providers has decreased. 67% state that they are much more careful after experiencing a cyber incident, and 79% state that they install security solutions such as antivirus applications on their infected devices.
Emad Haffar, Head of Technical Expertise at Kaspersky, said: “Since the beginning of the pandemic, 47% of users in Turkey have encountered at least one incident while using digital payments. It is therefore increasingly important to know how to interact securely with new technologies, including online banking and mobile wallet services. All stakeholders such as government, digital payment providers, users and cybersecurity companies need to come together to create a sustainable and secure payment ecosystem.”
Kaspersky experts recommend the following to help users make safe use of digital payment technologies:
Do not share your PIN, password or other financial information with anyone online or offline.
Avoid using public Wi-Fi hotspots for any online transactions.
Use a separate credit or debit card to make online transactions. Set spending limits on your cards to help track financial transactions.
Shop from trusted and official websites.
Use a reliable security solution on all your devices used for financial transactions. These solutions help detect fraudulent or suspicious activity and check the security of websites visited.
Kaspersky recommends developers, banks and companies providing digital payment services:
Invest in holistic cybersecurity solutions to help detect fraud at different levels of online payment processes and consumer touchpoints.
Complex attacks by APT groups against financial institutions are increasing. In-depth visibility and threat intelligence is becoming a necessity to protect your customers and ensure business continuity. Using Kaspersky Threat Intelligence service will help your IT teams analyze and mitigate threats.
Regularly organize cyber awareness trainings for your employees. This will help your employees be aware of fraud attempts and dangers when the organization is under attack and increase their role in protecting the organization.
