Merck, which maintains the distinction of being the world’s oldest and most established pharmaceutical and chemical company, performs social responsibility activities in Turkey in its 25th year, recognizing the social responsibility of contributing to the community it belongs to.
In its 25th year, Merck Turkey focused its planned social responsibility projects on supporting the education of earthquake-affected students who were at risk of interrupting their university studies following the major earthquake disaster in February. Merck Turkey established the ‘Merck Turkey 25th Year Scholarship Fund’ in partnership with the Turkish Education Foundation (TEV) to provide scholarships to 25 medical school students. In addition to this scholarship fund, the company also provided educational scholarships to 25 undergraduate earthquake-affected students studying in the country’s established universities, including 10 medical school students. Thus, Merck Turkey supported the educational journeys of a total of 50 earthquake-affected university students, 35 of whom are medical students. Merck Turkey employees can also contribute to the 25th Year Scholarship Fund through individual donations on a voluntary basis.
In addition, Merck globally, including the contributions of Merck Group employees and the Merck Family Foundation, as well as the in-kind and cash support of Merck Turkey to the earthquake region, reached a total of 1 million USD in donations to UNICEF.
Şehram Zayer, General Manager of Merck Turkey, said, “We share the deep sorrow of the earthquake disaster we have experienced as a country. In these difficult days, we believe in the power of solidarity.” He continued, “As the Merck Turkey family, we have contributed to healing the wounds from the very beginning. We are happy to support students at risk of interrupting their university education due to the earthquake as part of our 25th year in Turkey. As we have been doing for the past 25 years, we will continue to do our best to contribute to the community and support the education of young people.”
