Meta held a workshop where he shared the features and suggestions he implemented for young people to have a safer experience on Instagram.
Meta gave information about the security tools it brought for young users and parental controls on Instagram with the workshop it organized at TOBB. The information shared by Meta included measures developed to protect account security from bullying, harassment and offensive content, as well as moderation tools and information resources for parents and teens.
The control features implemented with the Family Center, which Meta has also made available in Turkey, allow parents to obtain detailed information about who has been complained and what type of complaint they have when their children report a post or account. These features also allow parents to limit their children’s daily and weekly Instagram usage to the hours they want. Along with the Family Hub, Instagram also offers an Education Center where parents can access expert resources and review helpful articles, videos, and tips on topics like how to talk to their kids about social media. Parents can also access video tutorials on how to use the new control tools on Instagram from the Education Center.
Instagram also recently announced that a new age verification method for teens under 18 is available starting today. With this feature, when a user wants to change their age from under 18 to over 18, they will be presented with two different age verification options. One of these methods will be to upload an official ID, and the other will be to shoot a video showing the user’s face. This video will be evaluated for age verification using new ageing technology.
With these measures, Meta aims to enable young people to have a safer time on Instagram and to provide parents with the opportunity to establish new control mechanisms for their children and to have training on social media control.
Speaking about Meta’s work for the safety of young people, Meta Turkey and Azerbaijan Public Policy Manager Sezen Yeşil continued her words by emphasizing raising the awareness of users on security, “As Meta, it is one of our biggest responsibilities to provide a safer internet experience to the young people on our platforms. With our Family Center, we also protect young people from the threats they may encounter on Instagram and equip parents with the necessary tools to provide their children with a safer Instagram experience without interfering with every action of young people. While doing this, we also support parents with our Education Center with various information resources to use these tools correctly and to communicate with their children in the most appropriate way. In the coming period, we aim to support safer internet use by informing more of our users about these features.”
