Written by Henrik Ibsen in the early 19th century, “Nora (A Doll’s House)” tells the story of Nora, a middle-class woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery, leaving behind her family and social status. Recognized as a feminist text, the play not only explores Nora’s struggle but also highlights the universal effort of individuals to assert themselves freely against societal pressures. Among Ibsen’s female characters, Nora stands out as perhaps the most colorful and hopeful, her story remaining timeless and relevant for 145 years. Tiyatro Circa’s debut production presents this enduring narrative from a universal perspective on a timeless plane.
Nora, a middle-class woman with a good husband and two children, strives to uphold society’s ideals of family life amidst the highs and lows of her existence. However, as the layers of the patriarchal system unravel and confront her, she realizes she can no longer live within the passive role assigned to her. With this realization, she resolves to leave everything she knows behind and ventures into the unknown in search of herself.
