Hyundai IONIQ 5 N / Top Performance in Electrification
• Hyundai conducted the endurance tests of the IONIQ 5 N in Sweden at minus 30 degrees.
• IONIQ 5 N, which successfully passed the tough tests in winter conditions, received a passing grade in all criteria.
• IONIQ 5 N will be launched in Europe in July, making it the first N model with performance.
While electric cars are becoming a new trend all over the world, Hyundai Motor Company is now drawing attention to a very different point. Starting to reap the rewards of its investments and hard efforts in electrification with attractive and exciting models, Hyundai has started to bring together electric mobility with the N models, which especially attract the attention of performance enthusiast users.
The first N model in series production high-performance electric
Hyundai N Department conducted the harsh winter tests of the IONIQ 5 N, the first high-performance mass-produced electric N model, at the Hyundai Mobis Proving Center in Arjeplog, Sweden. The Hyundai Mobis test site in Arjeplog counts as the world’s toughest and lowest gripping icy surfaces, given its location adjacent to the Arctic Circle. While the ground is completely covered with ice, the temperature drops to -30°C. Cold weather conditions, which affect the battery and charging time, completely complicate the working principle of electric cars in winter. In this direction; Testing the battery and HTRAC all-wheel drive system of the IONIQ 5 N, Hyundai N engineers sought to achieve the optimum balance between driving character and performance capability in extreme low friction conditions.
Hyundai also uses the brand’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) in the IONIQ 5 N model. Combining Hyundai N’s achievements in the World Rally Championship and high-level performance technologies with E-GMP, the engineers tested the road performance of the vehicle at the Nürburgring, the world’s most challenging race track. Tested on the tightest corners and long straights in both Sweden and Germany, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N typically consists of three main N brand criteria. Combining dynamics such as “cornering performance”, “racetrack capability” and “everyday sports car”, the IONIQ 5 N adapts the RM20e, RN22e, Veloster N E-TCR concepts to real life as the fastest production EV model in Hyundai’s electrification strategy. .
Ultimate driving pleasure with N Drift mode
The IONIQ 5 N’s high-end cornering ability is supported by enhanced driving modes. In addition to the driving modes; N Drift Optimizer also supports the car’s front and rear torque distribution, torque ratio, suspension stiffness, steering responses and the e-LSD (electronic Limited Slip Differential) system. The “N Drift” mode, which helps drivers of all levels to enjoy drifting, will be one of the features that excite performance enthusiast users.
Next generation e-LSD
The IONIQ 5 N is produced with a specially developed e-LSD, a limited slip differential. Driven by a fully electronic control unit, this differential instantly analyzes the responses from the sensors to determine when the wheel needs extra torque to improve handling. Thus, the e-LSD variably transmits the high torque to the wheels to maximize grip on the race track or during high-tempo driving. The IONIQ 5 N also effectively uses the optimized “N Torque” mode for different driving modes. Allowing to select the torque level for both the front and rear wheels, this system works with the e-LSD to distribute power to all four wheels in varying proportions. This directly affects the drift mode, increasing the level of enjoyment to the top.
Hyundai will reveal more technical information and equipment in the coming days. The exciting Hyundai IONIQ 5 N will be available after the launch in July.
